Blogpost: Judas’ Coins

1, 2, 3….30 pieces of silver. Not gold but silver. I have heard many lambast Judas for taking such pittance for a whole Son of God. We called it such and such but he probably thought he could get a whole field with that money. My guess, though.

I’m not here as his advocate or anything like that but let’s stop to think about it. Was the price for his betrayal thirty pieces of silver or was that price the worth he placed on Jesus? Or worse, was that the exact amount of money he desperately needed? I know these questions do not justify his actions but I’d want us to put a mirror before our eyes.

We may not walk over to the “Pharisees” and have the kind of deal Judas had with them but if we’d be honest with ourselves, we have that bargain everyday with our flesh, when we choose to lean to its cravings rather than to His desires. We tend to go on with our lives kissing Him on the cheek every Sunday morning and laying in the bed of sinful passions that night. Those sin-sized coins of betrayal may not send Him back to the cross this time but that heartfelt question Jesus asked Judas would still be asked you: “Are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” And like Judas I suppose you’d have no answer. It’s quite unfortunate that those were Jesus’ last words to him before he took his life.

But here you are and here I am, redeemed at a price higher than the scrimpy value we placed on Jesus. Yet our lives reflect nothing of that price Jesus paid for us. It’s almost as if we weren’t redeemed and even if we are, we live our lives as if the One who redeemed us could not sustain us. Buddy, you were bought at a hefty price! Do not live life as if Jesus didn’t do enough for you so you have to get a side hustle with sin to keep up. Judas wanted a lot more profit than what he was receiving from Jesus and that brought him to his demise. If only he knew what it’d mean for him to just be with Jesus.

Never cheat on our Saviour with those sin-sized coins of betrayal. He’s more than able to meet all your needs.
